Robert "Bob" Earl Kidd of Coker, Alabama, age 79, passed away on June 22, 2022 at Hospice of West Alabama. Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2022, at Big Creek Cemetery in Coker, Ala. with Dr. Ken Cheek officiating and Magnolia Chapel North directing.  The family respectfully requests no visitors after the service. Instead, the family will receive friends and visitors at a later date.

He was preceded in death by his father, S.A. Kidd Jr. and his mother, Mary Josephine Kidd.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kaye Kidd of Coker; son, Timothy C. Kidd (Sara) of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers, S.A. Kidd III (Pam) of Roanoke, AL and Jack T. Kidd (dear friend Kathleen McBride) of Coker; grandchildren, Samuel A. Kidd and Greta B. Kidd of Virginia Beach, VA; niece, Jessica Kidd of Coker; and nephew, Benjamin Kidd of Atlanta, GA.

Robert “Bob” Kidd was born in Mobile in 1943, the second of three sons of S.A. and Mary Jo Kidd. Eventually, the family moved to Tuscaloosa where Bob graduated from Tuscaloosa High School. He studied Geology at the University of Alabama where he obtained a BS in that discipline. Later, he was awarded the MS in Engineering Hydrology after extensive coursework, fieldwork, and research. In a long career with US Geological Survey, Bob authored and co-authored many scholarly works, especially in the field of groundwater Geology. On Alabama’s Gulf Coast, his work and research in the 1970s and 1980s helped to develop and improve the fresh water supply of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Dauphin Island. He also worked for the USGS in Barrow, Alaska at the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. Shortly before his retirement, he and two colleagues created a published report and study to help protect the critically endangered Alabama Blind Cavefish of northwest Alabama.

Bob was devoted to his family and church family (First Baptist of Tuscaloosa). He enjoyed hiking at the Sipsey River, fishing, gardening, and especially tending to his many beautiful roses. After retiring from the USGS, he realized his passion for both travel, charity, and mission work. In doing this, he traveled extensively in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe. He was a remarkable man who had an amazing life. He will be sorely missed by his wife (Kaye), son (Timothy), brothers, (S.A. and Jack), grandchildren (Samuel and Greta), niece (Jessica), nephew (Benjamin), and his many friends.

Pallbearers: Dr. Bobby Babb, Benjamin Kidd, Don Lewis, Ken Pate, Dovel Rock, and Dave Schertz.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations in honor of Bob be directed to Forever Wild Alabama or designated donations for Builders for Christ to First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa.
