Virginia Medlock (Ginger) Sweeney, 96 of Moundville, AL passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 1,2026. She was born on September 8. 1929 in Marianna, Fl, but spent most of her life in Pensacola, Fl.
Ginger graduated from Pensacola High School, studied Nursing Science briefly at Tulane University, worked in a clerical position for a doctor's office, and then spent a 28 year career in various Administration Support roles for Armstong World Industries in Pensacola. Mrs. Sweeney retired in 1989 and then went on to enjoy a very long life afterward. During later life, she had the opportunity to live in other areas of the country including Arizona, Georgia, Texas, and Alabama.
Mrs. Sweeney was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and supported the church by serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was active in helping youth sports leagues and attended almost all of her children's football and baseball games. Ginger enjoyed traveling, camping, square dancing, ceramics, and sewing (including the creation of her own square dance dresses). She thorough loved gardening and DIY landscaping.....favoring St. Augustine lawns, monkey grass borders, azaleas of assorted colors, elephant ear plants, caladiums, and hydrangeas. In her final years, the highlight of Mrs. Sweeney's days was the much anticipated nightly call from her dear sister Barbara (Bobbie)....they enjoyed a very close relationship.
Ginger was preceded in death by her parents, John R. and Cecil Medlock, and her beloved husband of almost 60 years, John G. Sweeney.
Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her son, Michael P. Sweeney (Laura); sister Barbara M. Johnson; grandsons Sean (Theresa) Sweeney and Ryan (Taylor) Burk; two great-grandchildren, as well as a niece and a nephew.

Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home of Northport, AL handled the cremation and no service will be held. Following their wishes, Ginger and John Sweeney's ashes will be scattered upon Pensacola Bay at a later date. The family would like to express gratitude to Hale County Hospital (especially RN Beth Moore) and Glen Haven Health and Rehabilitation (notably Physical Therapist Julie Allison and Nurse Assistant Denise Henderson) for their care and compassion over Mrs.Sweeney's last fourteen months of life.
