Richard Scott McCray, age 65 of Moundville, passed away November 3,2023 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023 at Moundville Baptist Church at 2:00 pm with Rev. Scott Stephens and Rev. Jason Duckett officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Moundville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Earnest Paul and Dorothy Reynolds McCray, brother; Terry McCray, and brother-in-law; Donald Ray Beckham and Oscar C. Beckham, Jr

He is survived by his wife Lana McCray, son; Brandon McCray and his wife Mary Beth, brother; Robin McCray and his wife Tabitha, grandchildren; Mary Evelyn and Lana Beth McCray and soon to be born grandson. He is also survived by his Aunt and Uncle; David Glenn and Betty McCray, nephews; Robbie McCray, Donny Beckham , Brian Beckham,niece; Katie McCray, mother-in-law; Ozella Beckham, sister-in-law; Carolyn Beckham, and a host of cousins.

Richard Scott McCray was born on November 2,1958 to Earnest Paul and Dorothy McCray in Bruce, Mississippi. He and his family moved to Moundville, Alabama in 1969. Richard has always been a constant and inspiring presence in the Hale County community.

After high school Richard attended the University of Alabama and received his bachelor’s degree in 1981. He and Lana were married on August 22,1981 following graduation.

Richard began his teaching and coaching career at Hale County High School in 1981 through 1994. In January of 1989 he and Lana welcomed their son Brandon into the world. From 1994 to 1999, Richard was the head football coach of the Greensboro High School football team. He received his Master‘s degree in education in 2000 from the University of West Alabama. He returned to Hale County High School in 2000 as assistant principal and then as principal in 2006 until his retirement in 2012.

Following retirement, Richard continued his involvement with Hale County Athletics over the years. He and Lana became grandparents in 2021 to their twin granddaughters and are expecting their grandson in December.

Richard was a beloved husband,father,grandfather,brother, and friend to everyone around him. He touched many lives and was a living testimony as a man of faith.

Pallbearers will be Joel Calhoun, Phil Pool, Roger Collins, Ricky Neill, Timmy King, and Danny Matherson. Honorary pallbearers are class of 1977, former coaches, teachers, staff, and students of Hale County School Systems, and the doctors and staff of DCH Manderson Cancer Center.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations in honor of Richard McCray to Hale County High School, Greensboro High School or The American Cancer Society.
