Martha Jean Terry Carlson, 93 of Northport died Friday November 4, 2022. A memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on November 7, 2022, at St Mark United Methodist Church with Reverends Bo Lloyd and John Drawhorn officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

A private family burial service will be held earlier at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Magnolia Funeral Home North directing.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Reuel Edward Terry and Jewel Enis Culberson Terry. She is survived by husband, Dr G. Norman Carlson, a son, Dr John Terry Carlson (Emy) and daughter Sara Jean Carslon Cooke (Gary); grandchildren, Dr John Terry Carlson, Jr (Delaune), Christopher Norman Carlson (Mary Laura), Marianne Mims Carlson Pearce (Taylor) Ana Carlson Cooke Wood, Andrew Douglas Cooke; Great grandchildren Adler Ramey Wood, Finley Jean Wood, Johns Morrow Carlson, Landry Bedford Carlson, Emelyn Mims Pearce and Frank Young Pearce; sister, Sara Jo Terry Hosey and many nieces and nephews.

Mama Jean, as she was known to her grandchildren and their friends, was born on July 8, 1929, in Tuscaloosa, her family moved to Northport in 1938. She graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1947, attended Huntington College for two years and received her BA degree in Sociology in 1951 from the University of Alabama.

After working for two years as a case worker for the Tuscaloosa County Department of Pensions and Securities, she married George Norman Carlson in 1953 and became an army wife for two years. She was employed by the Jefferson County Department of Pensions and Securities for four years and in 1959 returned to Northport with her husband and two small children.

Jean became active in the community by serving on the Northport Park Board, the Northport Chamber of Commerce and was active with the PTAs at schools her children attended.

Jean was a charter member of Saint Mark United Methodist church, a member of the McCollum Sunday School Class, worked with the children's department and was active in the leadership of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Tuscaloosa Community Bible Study, member of the Suburban Womens Club, and for many years Supervisor of Ward 21 for county, state, and national elections.

In 2002, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama named Jean the Northport Citizen of the Year.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to St Mark United Methodist Church or the charity of one's choice.
