Ellen was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She spent most of her childhood in Moundville,Alabama, where she was surrounded by cousins, aunts and uncles. Her memories of this time were spoken of often. Ellen recalled always feeling loved and made to feel special by the Mills family. Her cousins were also her closest friends from her youth.
Ellen graduated from West End High School in Birmingham, and later attended David Lipscomp College in Nashville, Tennessee. She often described her college years as the happiest time of her life. After college graduation, she married Dolphus in 1959. Her first job was teaching elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee while Dolphus was finishing his degree.
They then lived in Birmingham, where she had her three children. She taught first grade during this time. The family then moved to Darlington, South Carolina where Ellen also taught first and second grade. She retired after teaching for eleven years in 1972 to be a homemaker.
The family again moved in 1974 to Texas where they remained until the children had completed grade school. Next, Ellen and Dolphus lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma for several years before Dolphus' career took them full circle and they once again lived in Birmingham.
When Dolphus retired, they moved to Columbia, Missouri to enjoy their granddaughters.
Ellen loved watching and playing golf with her friends and traveling whenever she could.
Above all, Ellen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend who deeply believed in Jesus Christ. While we certainly miss her, we take great comfort in knowing that she is now home with the Lord.
Pallbearers are David Morrison, Dean Morrison, and Richard Doisy.
