Mabel Coleman was born October 6, 1922 in Northport, Alabama to Oscar Oliver and Leta McDaniel. After she graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1940, she worked at the Greyhound bus station as a ticket agent. In 1946, she married Wilson A. “Pete” Coleman, her husband of 63 years, and began her time as a homemaker - cooking, gardening, canning, sewing, mending, and raising her children - while supporting her husband’s career as a bus driver. Mabel was active in her community as a member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was also a faithful servant at Coker Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School Secretary, sang in the “Amazing Grays” Choir, and rocked babies in the nursery for over 50 years. Mabel and Pete helped organize Coker Water, where she served as the first bookkeeper, handwriting the bills for each family at her dining room table.
In later life, Mabel faithfully cared for her mother until her passing, and then spent many years enjoying camping trips with her husband. As she grew older, Mabel loved talking with friends and family, reading, and entertaining visitors in the McDaniel family home, where she lived for 92 years. Her friends and family fondly remember the steadfast love she showed to her family and community.
Pallbearers will be Courtney White, Greg Shaddix, Chase Wilson, Carson Foster, Connor White, Jon Coleman Foster, and Jonathan Foster.
