Obituary

James W. (Bill) Thomas, 76, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026. Born and raised in Chalkville, Alabama, he later moved to Northport, Alabama, where he spent his remaining years. Bill was the cherished son of the late Ben and Faye C. Thomas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon P. Thomas, with whom he shared many beautiful years.

Bill's journey began with his education at Hewitt Trussville High School, where he graduated in 1968. He furthered his studies at Jefferson State Community College, equipping himself for a lifelong career in the computer industry. Bill began his professional career as a computer programmer at US Pipe, then his trajectory altered into computer sales at companies such as Sperry Univac, StorageTek, and Forsythe Technology.

A man of boundless energy and enthusiasm, Bill was an avid golfer, spending countless sunlit days on the golf course. His love for the sport was infectious, and he generously shared his knowledge and passion with others. Bill was instrumental in teaching many individuals how to play golf, investing time and resources into a company, OneFlex, that specialized in fitting golfers with the proper clubs. His dedication extended beyond the sport itself, as he led a men’s small group that used golf as a metaphor for life’s many lessons.

Bill was a man known for his kindness, sense of humor, and generosity. He possessed an extraordinary ability to connect with people, striking up conversations with strangers as if they were lifelong friends. His warm spirit and childlike laughter will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill is survived by his loving children, Melissa T. Holmes (Scott) and Jay Thomas (Amanda). He was a proud grandfather to Clay Holmes, Collin Thomas, Corbin Thomas, and Cannon Thomas. Bill also leaves behind his dear sister, J. Elyse Thomas, with whom he shared many cherished memories.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on November 1, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Iron and Ember, located at Two Iron Drive, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35406. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life Bill lived.

James W. (Bill) Thomas will be remembered for his loving heart, his zest for life, and his unwavering dedication to those he loved. His legacy of kindness and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to Hospice of West Alabama, an organization that provided invaluable support and care.
