Obituary

James Chaffin, age 97, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by the love and gratitude of the family and friends whose lives he touched so deeply. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026, at Magnolia Chapel North with Bro. Eric Boykin officiating. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Cemetery in Beaverton, Ala., with Magnolia Chapel North directing. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Friday, at Magnolia Chapel North.

A member of the Greatest Generation, James lived a life defined by faith, integrity, service, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His 97 years were marked by dedication to his country, his church, his community, and above all, his family.

James proudly served in the United States Air Force, including participation in the historic Berlin Airlift, helping to support a city in need during a pivotal moment in history. Following his military service, he built a distinguished 33-year career with Southern Bell, earning the respect of colleagues and friends through his strong work ethic and dependable character.

A man of deep conviction and principle, James maintained a lifelong commitment to Freemasonry as a Master Mason, exemplifying the values of brotherhood, charity, and service throughout his life. Yet it was his devotion to his faith that stood at the center of everything he did. As a faithful member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, James served as a deacon for more than 50 years, ministering to generations of church members and offering a living example of Christian love and servant leadership.

Known affectionately throughout the community as "The Candy Man" and simply "Mr. Jim," he brought smiles wherever he went. His kindness, warm spirit, and generous heart made him beloved by children and adults alike. For many, a visit from Mr. Jim meant not only a piece of candy but also an encouraging word, a friendly smile, and a reminder that they were valued and loved.

James's greatest joy was found in his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. His life reflected the teachings of Christ through his steadfast love, quiet strength, and selfless care for the children entrusted to him. He leaves behind a legacy of faith and family that will continue to inspire future generations.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edythe Nell Chaffin; sons, Carl Wesley, Terry Wayne and Bobbie Glenn; parents, James and Lucille Chaffin; and siblings, Carl, Paul, Banks, Jerry, Hattie and Jimmie Lou; all of whom he loved dearly and whose memories he treasured.

He is lovingly survived by his sister, Jackie Atkinson; son, Tom and daughter-in-law Christine; daughter-in-law Rebecca Chaffin; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish the wisdom, love, and example he shared.

While his family grieves his passing, they rejoice in the assurance that James's deep faith in Jesus Christ has been made sight. They find comfort knowing that he has heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant," and has entered into the eternal peace and joy of his heavenly home.

James Chaffin's legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he loved, the church he faithfully served, and the faith he so beautifully demonstrated. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered with love always.

Pallbearers will be Tracy Johnson, Noah Johnson, Philip Junkin, Wes Williams, Ryan Chaffin, and Kaitlyn Fowler.
