Irene was born June 6, 1939, in Tuscaloosa County. She was a head majorette in high school, which was a perfect fit for her vibrant personality. Irene maintained her spirited temperament throughout her life.

After providentially meeting James (Sonny) Brown at a red light on the U of A campus, they married following a whirlwind romance. Irene shared in the operation of family businesses. She enjoyed the business aspect of her husband's company and their real estate ventures. They worked together in creating and maintaining their beautiful property called "Sonny Acres." They shared a mutual love of antiquing, traveling to historical sites, and visiting their children and grandchildren.

Irene loved her Creator and honored His creation. She was an avid gardener and "keeper of the earth." She took delight in tenderly nurturing her beautiful flowers and fruitful gardens. Irene lived in her home for fifty-six years. Although she had opportunities to move, she did not want to leave because it was, as she often said, "her little slice of heaven." Her most treasured gardens, though, were the hearts of her children and grandchildren. Her greatest desire is that they would know and love their Creator.   With faithfulness and steadfast love, she dedicated herself to showing them the character of God.

Irene's kitchen was the heart of her home.   She was known as a gracious hostess who warmly welcomed countless people of all backgrounds to enjoy fellowship and her delicious home-cooked meals. She often talked about hospitality as one of the ways she loved people.

Irene lived her life in preparation for the day that she would leave this earth. She was ready and eager to meet Jesus, her Messiah. Although the days preceding her death were difficult, her faith did not waver, nor did her love for her family. Her children and grandchildren were a joy to her heart.

Irene treasured God's word and lived a deep prayer life. She was a defender of the unborn and upheld issues of biblical justice.   She supported the nation of Israel and followed the mandate from Isaiah 62:6, and was a "watchman on the wall."  Irene deeply appreciated the privilege of living in the United States and prayed faithfully for our country.

Proverbs 31:30 "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."  Irene set an example of a true Proverbs 31 woman. She will be remembered for many godly attributes, but most of all, as a woman who feared the Lord.
