Harvey Dockery

TUSCALOOSA - Harvey S. Dockery, age 91, of Duncanville, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on December 14, 2022. A service of celebration will be held at Liberty Baptist Church on December 19, 2022 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery in Duncanville with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gillie C. Dockery, five brothers, and three sisters.

He is survived by the one and only love of his life, his wife Bonnie, of Duncanville, Ala.; his daughter Lesley Searcy (Jim) of Prattville, Ala.; his son Matthew Hassell of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his grandson Sam Searcy of Dallas, Texas; his sister, Minerva Tatum of Coaling, Ala; his brother Dawson Dockery (Katie) of Duncanville, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.

Harvey was a craftsman and loved building homes and working with wood. He was the owner of Harvey Dockery Construction Company until his retirement. As a faithful and lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church in Duncanville, he was the oldest serving Deacon. Harvey always sought to be a light to others as a living example of his Christian faith. Having grown up in a musical family, he loved singing Sacred Harp music and traveling to "all-day singings," singing in the church choir, and serving the elderly by singing in nursing homes. He was the community historian and people came from around the country to visit as they sought information about their ancestry. Harvey's greatest joys were his children, Lesley and Matt, and his grandson, Sam.

Pallbearers will be Jim Searcy, Sam Searcy, Kevin Dockery, George Tatum, Donny Dockery, Tommy Hall, Evan Rice, and Noah Levi Cooper. Honorary pallbearers are Becky Long, Gene & Emma Pearson, Grant Gray, Manuel & Martina Melo, Dr. Elaine Colby, Dr. Kara Bondly, members of Liberty Baptist Church, friends and neighbors of Duncanville and Tuscaloosa, the care team at Pro Health Hospice, especially Bethany Smith, Ashley Goodwin, Jessica Whatley, and Tamika Patton, and a special thank you to Rev. and Mrs. Greg Walker at Liberty Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, 15312 Serty Boyd Rd., Duncanville, AL 35456 or Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Pat Williams, 13322 Hwy 82 E, Duncanville, AL 35456.
