Gilbert Hix Anderson

June 18, 1954 - April 4, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gil Hix Anderson, a beloved husband, father, uncle, nephew, and friend, who left a profound impact on all who knew him. A talented musician, he shared his passion for music with those around him.

He was born on June 18, 1954, at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. He then moved to Brooklyn, MS where he was raised with his brother, Joe, by his parents, Hix and Audrey. He was actively involved with the Boy Scouts, graduated from and enjoyed playing football for Forrest County Agricultural High School and was a member of Brooklyn Methodist Church.

Gil bravely served his country as a survival instructor in the Air Force, spending time in Washington, Florida, the Panama Canal Zone, Alaska, and the Philippines. Despite enduring a harrowing parachuting accident during his service, his spirit remained unbroken, a testament to his strength and perseverance.

After the Air Force he pursued many different passions, such as playing music, working on electronics, and fixing cars. He also received an associate degree in electronics from Jones County Junior College.

Throughout his life, Gil was blessed with the love of family. He was a devoted father to his three daughters Megan, Kelly, Erin and his youngest son, River. Gil was the epitome of the "cool dad". His life changed for the best when he met his beloved wife, Janet, with whom he shared a long, strong relationship, rooted in a deep understanding and mutual respect for one another.

Gil will be remembered for the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him. His ability to relate with people, his quick wit, and the happiness he spread allowed him to genuinely connect with everyone he came in contact with. He never ceased to make new friends, each of whom he valued deeply leaving a lasting imprint on many lives.

He was a true friend, always ready to help. If something was broken, he knew how to fix it. He loved cars and being outside. Whether it was mowing the grass or helping a friend in need, he was just a call away.

He had a deep love for nature, that almost always resulted in back road detours that led to discovery. No matter where he was, he had an uncanny ability to uncover hidden swimming holes, the kind nestled deep in the woods, waiting like secret treasures. He loved mud riding with his kids, had a passion for riding motorcycles (for which he earned a few battle scars) and exploring in his off-road vehicles. Gil always chose the path less traveled. He had a love for building campfires, especially ones that he got to enjoy with the people he loved the most. If there was a slight chill in the air, you would be sure to find Gil in the front yard of his house in Big Sandy, Alabama, fire burning, guitar in hand, with friends enjoying music and company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and Hix (Myrt) Anderson, and his son, Justin Ian Anderson.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Wyatt Anderson, brother, Joe Anderson, aunt and uncle, Dot and Leon Regel, children Megan Hysom (Tyler), Kelly Anderson (Kevin), Erin Caudill (Brian), and River Anderson (Micayla). Also, his beloved grandchildren Audrey, Hannah Claire, Meredith, Henry, Anderson, Grant, Jackson, Gwendolyn, his first wife Gail Anderson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially all his homies and domies.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations to be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in the name of Gilbert Anderson.

A celebration of life will be held in June at Paul B. Johnson State Park in Hattiesburg, MS. More details will be shared at a later date.
