Clarence Gene Red | MOUNDVILLE Clarence Gene Red, age 80, of Moundville, died June 8, 2011, at Moundville Health and Rehabilitation with family at his side. Born in La Grande, Oregon in 1930, Gene joined the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He met the love of his life, Evelyn, on Canal Street in New Orleans in 1948. The two wed in 1949 and shared nearly 60 years together. After serving in the Navy, Gene settled with Evelyn in Belle Chasse, Louisiana in 1955 and remained there in the home he built until 2005 when they moved to Moundville, Alabama to be near their children. Gene spent 40 years as an auto body repairman and retired in 1995. After retirement he bought an airplane and pursued his pilot's license. He took his solo flight in late 1997, and even snuck Evelyn onboard for a flight around Plaquemines Parish when no one was looking. Gene is preceded in death by his mother, Zelma; father, James; brothers, James and Eugene; sister, Donna; wife, Evelyn; and granddaughter, Crystal. Gene leaves his daughters, Karen Hunter (Herman), Robin Watkins (Barry), and Sheri Tillie (John); his son, Terry Red (Tracy); 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Our hearts are filled with grief, but we are thankful that he is no longer suffering. We are honoring our father's wishes and will not be having a memorial service. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South is in charge of arrangements. Published in Tuscaloosa News on June 11, 2011
